Noor and Brevis shine in CSK's victory while KKR's playoff hopes falter.

At Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders' attempt to retain their IPL crown was severely hampered by a two-wicket loss to the already-defeated Chennai Super Kings. It was CSK's third victory of a difficult season and their first successful chase of 180 or more since 2019. Despite Andre Russell's late assault, Noor Ahmad's cunning 4 for 31 set up the victory by limiting the holders to 179.

Following a PowerPlay breakdown, CSK's chase subsequently faltered, but Dewald Brevis unleashed an exciting counterattack with a 25-ball 52. MS Dhoni put the finishing touch on a nerve-wracking chase with two wickets and two balls remaining after Shivam Dube anchored the second half with a six in the final over.

The game was won where?

during the middle overs. With 62 and 67 runs, respectively, KKR and CSK nearly neutralised one another in the PowerPlay. Despite losing five wickets in the PowerPlay, CSK was able to escape a bind thanks to the Brevis blitz, when their spin trio was able to put the brakes on the middle overs. Thirty of the 78 runs scored by the visitors in the nine middle overs came from a single over by Vaibhav Arora.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

PowerPlay: Narine and Rahane are quick to start

Phase Score: 67/1 (4s/6s: 9/3) (RR: 11.17)

Ajinkya Rahane's fluid start and edgy boundaries off the first ball allowed him to easily reach 29 off 14 at the end of the PowerPlay, justifying his decision to bat first. Rahane, who was brought in early after Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed by Anshul Kamboj in the second over, took advantage of a slip at 15 after Matheesha Pathirana mishit a pull at deep square-leg. Sunil Narine also put in a lot of effort, hitting two fours and a six in the fifth over to dismiss the returning Ravichandran Ashwin. Rahane finished a powerful PowerPlay that placed CSK under immediate strain with a four and a six in Kamboj's second over, which went for 17.

Middle Overs: Spin trio drags CSK back

Phase Score: 57/3 (RR: 6.33; 4s/6s: 11/2)

Ashwin set the tone with a tight seven-over of two runs as CSK fought their way back through spin. In the following over, Noor Ahmad made the breakthrough by stumping a roving Sunil Narine with a deft Dhoni intervention. Three balls later, Dhoni was back in action, becoming the first keeper to reach the 200th IPL dismissal when he pouched a delicate edge from Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Rahane broke the shackles with a six off Ravindra Jadeja after KKR had gone four overs without a boundary. However, Rahane was dismissed for a 33-ball 48 after an attempted reverse sweep found point by the left-arm spinner in his subsequent over. With the wicket, Jadeja became the IPL's all-time top wicket-taker for CSK.

Death Overs: Russell gives KKR a fighting total

Phase Score: 55/2 (RR: 11.00; 4s/6s: 5/3)

In the final overs, Andre Russell maintained a fast tempo by dismissing Matheesha Pathirana with a powerful pull for six and a hard-hitting four over extra cover. As the big-hitter holed out to long-off for a 21-ball 38 in his third over, Noor Ahmad, who had been held back for the Russell threat, scored. Manish Pandey eventually broke away with his first boundary, a six off his 22nd ball, as KKR persisted in pressing. Ayush Mhatre captured Rinku Singh at deep square leg, becoming the Afghan left-armer's fourth victim after he reverse-swept Noor for four.

Noor finished a stellar spell with 4 for 31 after being assigned to bowl the 19th. Pathirana kept KKR at 179 with a clean final over, giving up just six singles.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

PowerPlay: Urvil dazzles on debut but CSK slide early

Phase Score: 62/5 (RR: 10.33; 4s/6s: 4/5)

Urvil Patel, a rookie, ignited the PowerPlay with a spectacular 11-ball 33, laced with four sixes and a four, to start CSK's chase. Although it was a sign of things to come, CSK's current situation rapidly deteriorated when five wickets fell under the fielding limitations.

Vaibhav Arora was chipped to backward point after Ayush Mhatre was caught for a two-ball duck. Moeen Ali castled Devon Conway back in the XI. The collapse persisted as Urvil's fiery cameo was cut short by a deft catch at short third. Despite the early fireworks, CSK was in serious difficulty as Ashwin, who had been promoted to No. 4, hit straight to point and Jadeja sliced Varun Chakaravarthy onto his stumps.

Middle Overs: Brevis blitz lights up chase

Phase Score: 78/1 (RR: 8.67; 4s/6s: 5/5)

Dewald Brevis revived the pursuit with a spectacular counterattack as CSK was reeling. Brevis faced the spin danger of Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine, and he defeated the former with a powerful six and a clean four. However, he really went off in the eleventh over against Vaibhav Arora. Brevis mercilessly took advantage of the squandered opportunity to go for six after being dropped by Angkrish Raghuvanshi at long-off off the first ball. In a 30-run over that changed the course of the chase, he hit two consecutive sixes, a four, and another over extra cover. His fifty from 22 balls reduced the equation to 57 off 54.

However, Varun came back to put a stop to it just as momentum was shifting in CSK's favour. Shortly after, he had Brevis caught for a fifty-two off twenty-five balls, and KKR tightened the screws with two calm overs that left CSK requiring forty from the final five.

Death Overs: Dube, Dhoni take CSK over the line

Phase Score: 43/2 (RR: 8.60; 4s/6s: 2/3)

With the equation steadily narrowing, it was never more than a boundary an over that CSK needed. Shivam Dube set the tone for the finish by pulling Andre Russell for four and then clearing the ropes with assured lofted sixes off Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora. But Arora hit back in the 19th over, removing Dube for a 40-ball 45 and then castling Noor Ahmad to keep the game alive.

In order to defend eight runs off the last over, Russell started with a full toss, which MS Dhoni accepted as a gift and smashed over mid-wicket for six. With two balls remaining, debutant Anshul Kamboj completed the task with a self-assured loft over mid-on, securing the victory.

Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings 183/8 in 19.4 overs (Dewald Brevis 52, Shivam Dube 45; Varun Chakaravarthy 2-18) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders 179/6 in 20 overs (Ajinkya Rahane 48, Andre Russell 38; Noor Ahmad 4-31) by two wickets.
